I recently came across a Georgian bike traveller named Jumber Lezhava, and have to share a bit of his story! Jumber spent 10 YEARS cycling 285,000km around the world between the ages of 54 and 64.
He hit almost every country along the way. Only six countries wouldn’t provide visas; Libya, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Afghanistan, North Korea and Brunei.
Of course, cycling across almost every country is completely nuts, but I think the next bit is even more nuts…
In the years before he took off around the world, Jumber held multiple endurance push-up world records! The numbers are properly insane: how're 43,028 push-ups in 24 hours? Or 4,800,000 push-ups in a year (13,000 per day)???
@Tom_R_Allen writes in a blog post that Jumber is “clearly indomitable” (impossible to defeat) because he hacked his way through the Amazon rainforest between Brazil and French Guyana with his bike on his back, was shot at by Kalashnikov-wielding guerrillas in Swaziland, was thrown off his bike in a cyclone in Australia, and fended off doctors who wanted to amputate his gangrenous legs after a two-week stint in -30C or colder temperatures (his legs were fine in the end). Jumber says he was attacked by animals 132 times on his journey.
Jumber subsisted mostly on bread and raw garlic, but was otherwise well-fed by the strangers he met along the way.
Jumber passed away in 2014 at the age of 75. There is no doubt this legend lived a fuller life than most!

Here’s another LEGEND of the bicycle touring world that you should know about; Vladislav Ketov. ♀
With just $10 in his pocket, Vladislav left on an adventure to cycle the coastlines of the world. Over the next 21 years, he would visit the coastlines of Europe, Africa, Asia, and North & South America!
Incredibly, Vladislav didn’t even use the $10 he had at the time; he sent it back home to his family! This is because he found a great way to make money while he travelled - he painted portraits of the people he met.
As a Russian man travelling in the 1990s, Vladislav found it very difficult to obtain the necessary visas to complete his journey. He estimates that over FIVE years were spent waiting for visa approvals. Remember, there was no Schengen zone at that time, so even Europe was difficult to navigate. ⏳
Vladislav’s trip had actually been planned for many years before he set off. In 1988, he even put a PATENT on his trip idea to make sure nobody would accomplish it before he did. ♂
In the end, Vladislav finished his epic adventure at the age of 63. The trip distance was 169,000km, spanning 93 countries.
To achieve his goal, he even had to cycle across multiple war zones, including Yugoslavia, Somalia, Angola, Yemen, Mozambique, Cambodia and Colombia. Apparently, Somalia was the most complicated, dangerous and troublesome war zone due to the the sheer number of fighting clans.
How many times did his bike get stolen over two decades? Once. In his home country (Russia).
Hats off, Vladislav!
Evo još jedne LEGENDE sveta biciklističkih obilazaka o kojoj biste trebali znati; Vladislav Ketov.
